The Trique live in the western region of Oaxaca, Mexico. This indigenous group wears a distinctive red banded huipil which is woven on a white cotton background. Under the huipil a navy enredo or wrap around skirt is worn. This fiesta huipil was woven on a backstrap loom and has a cotton ground with wrapped brocading in wool in horizontal bands of geometric shapes and two large vertical cotton bands in navy down the front and back of the huipil. The geometric patterning is a beautifully stylized representation of stars, animals, and flowers. Hot pink and orange ribbon surround the neckline and orange and pink ribbons hang down the back to scare the evil spirits away. Fifty years old. Huipil has some minor moth damage.
