Ignatius of Loyola was a Spanish saint who founded the Jesuits in 1540, a religious order that promoted Christian devotion and evangelization in the New World. These blue articulated sculptures were intended to be dressed in cloth and made in a lighter wood so that they could more easily be proceded through the streets. They were found in the churches and chapels and used for public ceremonies and in homes for private devotion. In the nineteenth century they became even more popular for home altars because they could be made in any size thus making their cost much more accessible. Families would then dress them according to the particular occasion or ritual and would even change their jewelry. Nineteeth century.
The bust of Loyola has glass eyes, a peaceful expression, a beard and beautiful facial coloring. It has quite a bit of damage and ancient worm holes that give it a lot of character.
