The simple skull mask offered here was produced in the state of Veracruz in the middle of the 20th century. It represents death and would have been used in many of the ceremonial dances as death is always one of the main characters. Ghoulish eyes and crudely formed teeth give the mask a very primitive look. It was carved from a single piece of wood painted white overall with red paint on the upper part of the skull and around the mouth. Black accents define its features and outline and fill in the shape of a crescent moon, representing a Moor, in the upper portion of the mask.
The condition of the interior region of the mask suggests that it has been well-worn. Only a few sites where damage is apparent can be observed on the exterior of the work, while the inside has bore holes that previously housed tiny insects and some light cracking. It is a simple yet charming piece that would serve any setting well.
