These nativity figures of Joseph and Mary were carved out of wood and articulated so that they could be easily dressed. Elaborate mangers were set up in the homes at Christmas with these nineteenth century pieces adding other biblical figures, shepherds and animals. Families would purchase the figures painted in blue and would make their traditional clothing or have the nuns in the community do it.
The figure of Mary is dressed in her undergarments (slip and pantaloons), with simple sandals painted on her feet and glass eyes. She would have, at one time, been wearing earrings and a necklace. The figure of Joseph has glass eyes, with a blue body and sandals painted on his feet as well. Their faces are beautifully executed expressing a sweetness as they gaze down at the Christ Child who now has been unfortunately lost. Both figures are missing several fingers but otherwise are in excellent condition.
