Strands of dyed material have been sewn together to form a large beard that dominates the countenance of the charming, grizzled mask offered here. It is likely that the piece represents Poncius Pilate leader of the Pilates or Moors/Negritios against Santiago/St.James in the dance drama of the Negritos. The wire mesh that has been formed to fit the wearer’s face is accented with eyes and rosy cheeks, painted on the mesh to give the mask a life-like appearance. The same material sewn to form the beard has been braided into eyebrows.
The piece is in excellent condition apart from some slight fraying at the ends of the braids. It is a charming and historically significant piece that would serve as an excellent, attractive addition to any collection.
