This charmingly naïve ceremonial mask was hand carved in the Highlands of the state of Puebla during the 1960's. It features thick eyebrows, a goatee, and stylized sideburns painted on a lightly colored face. Vision slits have been carved above two crudely painted eyes. Another opening has been carved for the mouth to facilitate breathing for the wearer. The mask shows wear that is indicative of its age, use, and importance in whatever festivity it was used for. It would make an excellent addition to any mask collection.
