The Dance of the Santiagueros was first performed in 1538 during the celebration of Corpus Cristi. The dance centers on a wooden horse, thought to have purifying powers to all that dance in direct contact with it. A battle sequence is performed, with Santiago (patron saint of Spain) leading an army of Christians against the infidels.
The monochromatic mask offered here is representative of one of the infidels, a Moor. It is carved from wood with beautiful, thoughtful detail. Part of the nose has been chipped and the dark exterior has peeled in parts, revealing the light-colored wood from which the piece was carved. It is a stunning and powerful piece from an important Mexican tradition.
