The charm of the simple mask offered here rests almost entirely in the manner in which the wood has been shaped and polished without hardly any detailing except for the gentleman's black hair. The condition of the beautiful wood grain on the face of the mask and on the interior indicates that the piece was not heavily used. It was constructed for the Dance of the Old Men, a performance where townspeople dress as mischievous old men which usually concludes in a lot of trembling and falling to the earth.
The mask has minimal wear but there are some imperfections and chips in the black paint of the facial hair. There is also a light dust accumulation around the embossed edges of the eyes and mouth. The piece is otherwise in very good condition and would make a charming addition to any collection.
