Elemental, indigenous and striking, this ceremonial mask features simple woodcarving with intricately braided strands of rope to represent hair. The facial structures seem to be an exaggerative representation of the African slaves that were forced across the Atlantic by the conquistadors.
There is some wear due to the use of the mask in ceremonial processions and dances. A large crack runs down the length of the nose and the paint has been damaged in some sites around the face of the mask. It is in otherwise good condition and, although not immediately identifiable among the rest of our Mexican and Latin American collection, it is a unique piece of possibly African origin, that would serve as a charming addition to any space.
