A truly unique piece, this ceremonial mask of a Zuavo, a Frenchman, who is one of the many participants in this dance, features woven blonde strands of natural fibers that serve as eyebrows, moustache and a beard, attached to a brightly painted pink mask. The carved wooden base of the piece is simple but charming, lacking any detail other than the holes for the eyes, nostrils, and mouth. A small length of metal pierces the back of the mask in two sites, stabilizing the mask to the head of performers during the dance sequences in this votive war dance of Carnival in Puebla. This piece is in excellent condition.
