A brightly painted skull with high-relief decoration signed Enrique Linares M. Mexico D.F.
A specialty of the Linares family, the animated skull, or calavera, offered here is a florid red skull, to which decorative elements such as a spider and snake have been applied.
Created by the famed Linares family of Mexico City, the masters of cartoneria; sculpture created in papier mache. For this process, a wire or reed armature is formed in a desired shape and then covered in scrap paper and glue. Once dried, fanciful patterns of bright colors are applied with aniline dyes or oil-based paints.
A dime-sized hole in the right cheek of the skull is the only damage to the sculpture. Enrique Linares created this piece sometime in the 1970s or 1980s.
