Woven on a treadle loom in two panels and hand sewn together, this "perraje"or long shawl is in brightly colored striped wool with ikat or "jaspe" designs. The designs are figural and geometric ikat patterning on an indigo background. Ikat is a method of tie-dyeing the yarn which is patterned before the weaving process begins. The wool is tied with string at specific intervals and then dipped into a dye bath. The white undyed areas are then woven into the cloth. This Guatemalan shawl was made in the 1950's - 1960's.
